Woodbridge’s football team put on a dominating performance Friday night celebrating homecoming with a 38-0 victory over Northwood to take over sole possession of first place in the Pacific Coast League.
The Warriors were clicking from the start in front of a capacity crowd at University against the upstart Timberwolves, who had won five games in a row, including their league opener.
“I thought defensively they set the tone,” said Woodbridge Coach Rick Gibson of his defense. “They were the best they’ve played all year defensively. That’s a pretty decent offensive team and they shut them down.”
Woodbridge (4-3, 2-0) allowed Northwood (5-2, 1-1) just 94 yards passing and 46 yards rushing.
Jacob Nash and Elyjah Rush recorded interceptions for the Warriors.
Offensively, the Warriors were clicking too with quarterback Kyle Hurry leading the way. Hurry passed for 273 yards and two touchdowns, including a 75-yard strike to Nash late in the third quarter which put the Warriors ahead 31-0.
“It was a big win, I think it’s a credit to our defense getting us the ball,” said Hurry. “We wouldn’t have been out there if they didn’t get all those stops and turnovers.”
The touchdown to Nash was the play that sealed the win.
“We worked on it in practice and we knew we were going to come to it,” Hurry said. “We were just trying to set it up and then it came down to it and then he beat him so I just threw it up there and he came down with it.”
Nash had quite a game on offense too, hauling in eight catches for 225 yards.
Nikos Reza also had two touchdown runs of 2 and 4 yards (and 62 yards rushing on the game), Rush had a 3-yard TD run, Jakob Trestik had a 26-yard field goal and Regis Baky hauled in a 5-yard TD catch from Hurry.
Northwood wasn’t able to get much going. Quarterback Jaden Piazza, under heavy pressure, passed for 54 yards and was intercepted twice. Trey Littlejohn hauled in two catches for 47 yards for Northwood, which came in with high hopes.
“I don’t know how many first downs we got but not many,” said Northwood Coach Pete Mitchell. “We weren’t able to give our quarterback much time and there it is. The game of football, you have to be able to get a few first downs. Defensively, we actually didn’t play bad at times. We got to get better offensively, absolutely.”
